Abarth announces simplified hot hatch line-up for 2022
Customers can choose between the Abarth 595 or the feistier 695 variant, with Turismo or range-topping Competizione trims available
An all-electric Abarth 500 may be right around the corner, but for 2022, Fiat’s high-performance arm is streamlining its range of petrol-engined hot hatches to extend their appeal.
The Abarth 595 is the entry point to the range, powered by a 1.4-litre motor which develops 163bhp and 230Nm of torque thanks to a Garrett turbocharger. Equipped with a five-speed manual gearbox, the 595 sprints to 62mph from rest in 7.3 seconds, and powers on to a 135mph top speed. The 595’s racy bodywork is unchanged, with gaping vents, deeper sills and swollen bumpers marking it out from lesser models.
For extra cost, the 595 is offered in Turismo trim which brings 17-inch wheels, unique badging and black leather upholstery inside. The Abarth’s lower, stiffer chassis setup - featuring Koni dampers at the rear - is carried over with the range updates.
The top-flight Abarth 695 produces 178bhp and 250Nm from the same engine as the 595. The extra grunt trims 0.6 seconds from the 0-62mph time, and raises the top speed to 140mph. The suspension gains Koni front shock absorbers, and the 695 is also available in Turismo guise, bringing the same wheels and interior trim as the 595 Turismo.
However, the flagship Competizione spec is unique to the 695, and includes bespoke 17-inch alloys, Competizione badging and racier Sabelt bucket seats. However, all Turismo and Competizione variants receive the Tech Pack as standard, which includes automatic climate control and a seven-inch infotainment screen with sat-nav.
These models are also equipped with the Style Pack, adding an upgraded Beats stereo and xenon headlights. In addition to the streamlined range, Abarth has introduced a new Orange Racing paint colour, which is designed to evoke the classic Fiat 131 Abarth which was available in a similar shade.
The Abarth 595 is priced from £22,245, with Turismo trim costing a further £1,000. Given its chassis and power upgrades, the 695 flagship costs £25,445, with the Turismo and Competizione editions offered at £26,245 and £28,245 respectively.
